How Sleep Cycles Actually Work

Sleep isn't one continuous state. Each night your brain moves through a repeating sequence of distinct stages — understanding that sequence is the whole reason cycle-based bedtime planning works.

The four stages of a sleep cycle

A single sleep cycle moves through four stages, typically taking somewhere between 80 and 110 minutes, with 90 minutes used as a common planning average:

  • Stage 1 (light sleep, transition): the brief drift between wakefulness and sleep. Easy to wake from, lasts only a few minutes.
  • Stage 2 (light sleep): heart rate and body temperature drop. This stage makes up the largest share of total sleep time.
  • Stage 3 (deep sleep / slow-wave sleep): the hardest stage to wake from. Tissue repair, immune function, and physical recovery are concentrated here.
  • REM sleep: brain activity closer to waking levels, most dreaming occurs here, and it plays a key role in memory consolidation and emotional processing.

Early cycles in the night lean more heavily toward deep sleep; later cycles shift toward more REM. That's part of why cutting a night short doesn't just remove "some sleep" — it disproportionately cuts into REM.

Why waking mid-cycle feels bad

Being woken during deep sleep interrupts your brain in its slowest, least alert state, producing sleep inertia — that heavy, disoriented grogginess that can take 15–30 minutes to fully clear. Waking near the natural boundary between two cycles, when you're passing back through lighter sleep, tends to feel far easier, even at the exact same total sleep duration.

This is the logic behind Chrona's calculator: instead of just targeting a round number of hours, it works backward or forward in whole cycles from your wake-up or bedtime, aiming to land you near a cycle boundary rather than in the middle of deep sleep.

Why cycle length isn't identical for everyone

90 minutes is a widely cited average, but real cycle length varies by person, age, and even night to night — commonly somewhere between 80 and 110 minutes. Stress, alcohol, illness, and existing sleep debt can all shift it. That's why the calculator's settings panel lets you adjust cycle length rather than locking everyone into the same number.
